Benzene compounds?

Benzene compounds?
Why can long term exposure to benzene cause leukemia? but many compounds that contain benzene rings are perfectly safe to consume?

- Chloralhydrate
All substances taken by the body need to be changed, to make them well soluble in the urine or other body fluids, so they can be readily excreted. Benzene is very hydrophobic, it needs this change very much, but it's also very nonreactive. So it's epoxidated by the enzyme cytochrome P450. This epoxide is very reactive, and changed readily to soluble substances. But the problem is, that it's so reactive, that it attacks bases in nucleic acids, creating mutations. Other chemicals undergo another change, that doesn;t involve this dangerous intermediate - toluene to benzoic acid, aniline and phenol to acyl derivatives... But all nonreactive aromatics are treated like benzene, being dangerous for people...
