Can you help me with a question about blood disorders?
My cousin was born Thursday. It wasn't known until she was born that she had Down Syndrome. She was doing very well, but all of a sudden her white blood cell number is at 1,000. The drugs that they gave her to boost them worked at first, but now they are not. They have begun a new drug, which they are giving a few days to work, but if it doesnt work they said that there will be nothing else that they can do. They said they can't give her a bone marrow transplant. She is scheduled for a CAT scan in the morning as well, because suddenly today she has a large "knot" on the back of her head. My aunt was thinking possibly she had leukemia, but wouldn't her blood cells be extremely high, rather than extremely low? If anyone knows or has experienced something similar with their newborn I would appreciate some thoughts. Thank You.

This is not the forum to ask such questions. My advise to you is to check with a doc for professional help on this.

Oh, I feel so very sorry for you and your family. You must be worried sick!
One of the things that I came across when working at a large children's hospital was what is known as an AVM which stands for an arterio-venous malformation which is a condition that happens during growth in the womb. It occurs in the small capillaries between an artery and a vein. Enlarged blood vessels are produced, which can form a knot that looks like a "bag of worms". The pressure in the enlarged blood vessels causes movement (or shunting) of blood from artery to vein across the AVM.
When a large AVM is present in a newborn baby, the symptoms may cause heart problems. This is because the pressure in the AVM moves (or shunts) blood from the arteries into the veins and causes an increase of blood in the veins. The baby's heart cannot cope with the increased load.
This is a treatable disease but usually requires very intricate neurosurgery. My prayers go out to you and your family. I do not know if this has anything to do with your cousin's condition but here is more information below.
As soon as you mentioned a large "knot", AVM was my first thought.
