Do Leukemia and Lymphoba always make the white blood cell count go up?

Do Leukemia and Lymphoba always make the white blood cell count go up?
I'm just wondering. When someone has Leukemia or Lymphoba, does it ALWAYS make someones white blood count go up? So would the raised white blood count be shown on a regular blood test?

Thanks a ton. >.<
Carol, thanks for that information, it was really helpful, but I'm wondering if it ALWAYS goes up when that disease is present in the body.

Thank-You!

no................the smear would show anormal cells......a cbc is good, but, flow cytometry is better test...........

Hello Linda:

I know when I had Leukemia my white cell count was so high
and my red cell count was low. I had to have 2 transfusions.
as well as one of the first to have chemo way back in 1977.
But your white cell count goes up because of the abnormal
cells in the blood are multiplying so fast it sees it as a
infection at first in the blood so it is trying to make it's self
better. But instead it just gets worse.
So chemo kills off the good cells as well as the bad cells
then they have to rebuild your blood system.

Yes Linda it does and sometimes you require a bone
marro transplant to get better. I know I did. as well as
several blood transfusions and chemo when it was not
so common. ok not common at all I was one of the first
10 test patiants to under go it for leukemia. It was
scarry back then and the scars on my arm from it makes
me look like a junkie and I never did any drugs that were
not prescribed to me. Back than It also took my hair
longer to come back in too. as well as so sick.
Now I have a port so they just plug me in. not as bad.

And with Lymphoba your white cell count will also go
up as it would with leukemia but have differant genetic
markers. But both are treated with chemo and bone marrow
transplants.

I'm not as familiar with lymphoma as I am with leukemia. With leukemia white blood cell counts do NOT always go up. In some cases white counts are elevated, but in some cases they are unaffected or even low. In my son's case, his white blood cell count was very high when he was diagnosed with AML leukemia last December. His count may have been high because of the leukemia or it may have been high because he was trying to fight off a cold. In some cases, however, the bone marrow will slow down production or even cease production altogether. This can be true of any blood cells that are produced, not just the white blood cells.

I hope that answers your question, if you have any more questions of anything feel free to email me (crazycanuckj@yahoo.ca) or send me an IM (crazycanuckj).

i'm not sure about lymphoma, but with leukemia, some patients actually initially present with normal or low wbc - lower than the reference range (normal range) of between 3.9 - 11 d/L. it's essentially leukopenia, and though not quite as common as those presenting with high wbc, this is known as aleukemia.

according to research this can happen with any type of leukemia (incidence of approximately 30% in the four main leukemias) but from what i've read before, seemingly more likely to occur in hairy cell leukemia.

so the partial answer to your question is no, leukemia doesn't always show up as an elevated wbc, and could be quite the contrary, although in most straightforward cases wbc can be easily detected on a regular blood test, like mine did.

hope you manage to find out what you're looking for! sorry i can't help about the lymphoma part. as far as i know, i don't think having a low or high wbc read is part of the diagnostic workout for lymphoma, whether hodgkins or non-hodgkins although it is hematological~ try asking your onco and see =)
