Does a Bone marrow biopsy hurt?
I am twelve and I have to get one on Sunday to see if I have leukemia. Does it hurt really bad?? What's the cutoff age for getting the iv that makes you get knocked out for it? If I'm 12 am I young enough to get that stuff so I can sleep during it? PleAse help! Thank you!

It's not something that you'd do for kicks, but I've been thru worse ..... As to the age question, I was like 31, so never came up.. Good Luck.

The first thing they will do is numb the skin over the area the sample is taken from. This is usually the hip bone. This can sting a little.
People do report a dull pain when the actual biopsy it taken, as the inside of the bone cannot be numbed. There can also be some pain afterwards over the biopsy site, but the doctor can prescribe pain relief for that.
I cannot say I have heard of people being given IV medication, but sometimes nitrous oxide (laughing gas) or anti-anxiety medication can be given.
Do talk to the doctor performing the biopsy beforehand, and express your concerns about pain, and ask if there is anything he is able to give you.
