I'd make it a point to be there for the person. I dunno how distant the relationship is, but a visit is definately in order. DON'T try and avoid the "C" as a topic, but don't dwell on it either.
Dealing with it is a process, but helping the person is about the best way to help YOURSELF to cope. He/she is going to need people to be strong with them and for them. About the most valuable factor you can be for the person is to be a source of normalcy. THAT won't be easy, but study on the disease so you know what to excpect, and you can help your neighbor. Leukemia and other forms of cancer is a battle, but it CAN be won.

Leukemia is not an automatic death sentence. Find out what type your friend has .There are a great many types of leukemia which if not curable can be controlled quite successfully and enable the sufferer to lead a normal life apart from occasionable trearment.If your friend is unfortunate enough to have a terminal condition please do not avoid him/her they will will appreciate your company and a sympathetic ear .Quite often a person in this situation avoids their ill friend because of their inability to cope with his terminal illness causing him more suffering in the process.

You offer to help, to run errands, to house clean, to answer phones.
This is all about the person with leukaemia and your job is to be as helpful and unobstrusive as possible.
