I have a question about my leukemia chemotherapy?

I have a question about my leukemia chemotherapy?
Ok soo I'm 13 and I was diagnosed with leukemia three weeks ago. I'm already bald and I had a lot of side effects and I've been in the hospital for a while now. So I have to have 7 more months of chemotherapy that is "intensive" and then I have to have 2 years and 3 months of chemo that is less hard on me which i think is called maintenance chemo.

So my question is, during the two years and three months of my maintenance chemo, will my hair still be gone? Will I be bald during those two years? This chemo makes me as a girl be bald, so will the maintce stuff do that too??

Thanks for the help:) I know my hair doesn't define me and neither does my aml leukemia, but I was just wondering.

You have a choice in which fashion statement you will make. Have fun with choosing to either go with or without hair. Either way I am sure you will look great. Focus on creating your own image. The answer to your question, " no you don't have to be without your hair". There are some beautiful wigs in style right now. I was thinking of trying some out to bring out the "diva" in me. Its your season to find yourself. Females tend to do this anyway through life changing events!

Unfortunately hair loss is a side effect of having chemo. The best person to speak to about your hair growth during the maintenance chemo is your treating doctor. They will be able to talk to you about this and answer your question more accurately.

Here is a link to a website specifically designed for young people who have cancer or who have a family member with cancer. It's a place where young people can share their own stories, chat in forums and source information. Thought you might find it useful: http://www.nowwhat.org.au/

All the very best with your treatment.

I'm still confused. First post, you have ALL. Second post, you have no diagnosis, but symptoms and want to know what's wrong. Third post, you're being treated for AML. Which is it?

I will answer your question anyway. Perhaps I'm missing something in the timing of all your posts or something.

Hair may come and go throughout your treatment. I don't know exactly what chemo you'll be getting through maintenance- I've never heard of maintenance for AML lasting that long (or really, any maintenance for AML)- is this a new protocol? Do you know the protocol number? With ALL, hair usually comes back at the beginning of maintenance and can thin during, and regrow during, several times. But again, AML doesn't usually require such long treatment, so I don't know what your hair would do for that.
