is acute myelocytic leukemia inherited?

is acute myelocytic leukemia inherited?

- norton g
momijawea - Leukemia strikes sporadically. Though hereditary influences or environmental exposures may contribute to risk, its occurrence is usually considered random. For some rare families, however, the disease is hereditary. In only a few dozen known cases, parents pass it to their offspring as a single gene.

Genetics (inheritance) has been associated with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML), but till now I have not seen any findings that acute myelocytic leukemia (AML) has any genetic (inherited) basis.

It isn't known if AML can be inherited but certain gene mutations that have been observed to correlate with leukemia. I don't know a whole lot about the chronic leukemias or ALL, but since my son is fighting AML leukemia, I have read up on it.

Some genetic mutations that have been seen to be favourable for AML patients include:
- Translocation between chromosomes 8 and 21 (seen in patients with M2)
- Inversion of chromosome 16 (seen in patients with M4)
- Translocation between chromosomes 15 and 17 (seen in patients with M3)

Some genetic mutations that have been seen to be unfavourable for AML patients include:
- Deletion (loss) of part of chromosome 5 or 7 (no specific AML type)
- Translocation between chromosomes 9 and 11 (seen in patients with M5)
- Extra chromosome 8 (no specific AML type)
