No it is NOT contagious. You can't 'catch' it and don't have to 'avoid' her.

Getting cancer was not her fault. She probably couldn't have avoided it by excerising more, or eating better. Sometimes bad things just happen.

No... Cancer isn't contagious. You won't mutate cells by standing beside someone who has cancer. How old are you?

It's not contagious. Your friend's disease is no threat to you.

Leukemia is a type of cancer in which a certain type of white blood cell malfunctions. Though it is known how it happens, no one knows why it happens.

You cannot catch any kind of cancer. For leukemia there are no known risk factors, it can be genetic, but isn't always, and they don't know what causes it otherwise.
Do NOT avoid her, treat her normally, even though things will get tougher. Just, support her, and there's tons of info online about leukemia. Go to the leukemia and lympnoma assiosiation page, you can learn a lot, so you can better understand what she is going through, and not be confused and fearful.

FeLV (Feline Leukemia Virus) and FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus)

Feline Leukemia Virus ( FeLV) is contagious and is passed by direct cat to cat contact, such as in mutual grooming or bite wounds. Not all cats who contact it die from the disease. Some fight it off and recover and some become carriers of the virus. FeLV suppresses a cats immune system, allowing other diseases to make the cat extremely sick. It can also cause lymphatic cancer.
