Can the bone marrow transplant be done before the leukemia comes back? This is in the case of a 24 year-old male.

I believe it is used to treat other forms of cancer as well, to varying degrees of success. The link below is to a 2001 press release from Fred Hutchison Cancer Research center explaining some of their findings.

when this is the only solution, when the stem cells of the person are already invaded by cancer cells, the doctors will imediately use a bone marrow transplant. but when there's a chance op recovery without the transplant, when the stem cells are not invaded, chemotherapy will be used and no transplant. when there's a relapse, that can be a sign that the stem cells were invaded but that it was not quiet obvious and then transplant is necessairy. altough than it can still be that the stem cells were not invaded, but that tha cancer cells were not entirely killed and then chemotherapy can be used again. in general, it depends on the fact if the stem cells are infected.

Yes, stem cell transplant can and usually should be done before relapse. Your doctor may tell you differently, but it will not hurt to get an opinion from an M.D. who does bone marrow transplants. then, you can make an informed decision.
