she was only 2 and a half years old when she was diagnosed with acute lymphocytic leukemia. Now that after undergoing chemos for about 3 years, (she was to finish her chemo this feb 2009) the doctor said she shifted to MIXED PHENOTYPE ACUTE LEUKEMIA.Does anyone can give info on this type of leukemia. Her doctor said its another 3 years of chemotheraphy. Is prolonged exposure of the body to chemotheraphy will have its effects on my baby?can i use herbal medicines or anything else for her treatment instead of chemos?pls help me.

First off, let me say how sorry I am to hear about what you are going through. Currently I am heading into my last round of chemo for hodgkins lymphoma, but when I was 7 I went through the full 3 years for ALL as well.

Let me first say, that there is not an effective herbal treatment for cancer. There are a lot of ways you can supplement the treatments with herbs and supplements for the nausea, aches, pains, anemia, etc, etc, etc that go hand in hand with chemo, but do not think for a second that at this point, you can substitute them.

Chemo sucks. A lot. Hard. There is nothing nice about chemo, and I can say first hand that nobody should have to go through it. Particularly at the age you are speaking of. But your daughter has a life to live, and chemo is the best chance you have for that to happen.

Listen to your doctors. Do research into ways to supplement the treatments and help take away the pain and side effects that are going to happen. But chemo is the best option, I am sorry to say.

The good news is on this though, childhood cancers are among the most researched and easily fought. There is also a HUGE support network available through the American Cancer Society and other organizations that can help you through this time. Also, your daughter may get to a point where she wants to start talking about this with people who have/are going through what she is going through. i don't where you are located, but in the US there are several summer camps run by cancer support organizations, most of which are free to the camper and their family, which are an amazing source of support to a pediatric oncology patient. I have met some of the people whom I call my dearest and closest friends at one in particular in Washington.

My thoughts are with you.

You have a TON of questions about this that are unanswered. The very best thing for you to do is schedule a consultation appointment with the doctor. Bring in pen and paper or a voice recorder or web cam or something. Bring in all these questions you are asking us that we cant answer, have them written down so you dont forget anything. Ask (demand if you have to) that the doctor explain EVERYTHING you have questions about until you can walk out and clearly explain it to someone else.
