This is a very difficult question, becuase it also depends on what type of leukemia the patient has. There are so many different types, eg AML or ALL (acute lymphocytic leukemia) or CML or CLL (chronic lymphocytic leukemia). And all differ. Most times, one cell line of the white cells multiply out of control, causing problems with they other cell lines since there is no room in the bone marrow for the other types. Typically called blast crisis. This often causes anemia (low red blood cell numbers), etc. Then, when you undergo chemotherapy, usually kills all the cells and causes a brief neutrapenia (essentially no white cells) and anemia. Thus, these people undergoing chemo have to be in the hospital so they are closely monitored, and would most likely need transfusions (with irradiated blood, leukoreduced (no white cells), etc).
