What is the worst medical problem you have encountered with any of your childre?

What is the worst medical problem you have encountered with any of your childre?
My 19 month old daughter recently went into remission after a 14 month battle with juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia. She has grown her beautiful hair back. As you can see in my photo!

The worst thing that happened during the time had leukemia was when she caught an unknown infection at 6 months old and her belly blew up to 3 times it size. She began vomiting and the antibiotics she was put on made her even more sick and she could not eat. They put a G-Tube in and it was in for 4 weeks. She then got an infection from surgery and had to be put on more antibiotics that made her even more sick. It was a mess. She's a trooper though and now at 19 months old is doing better than ever!

What about your kids? What is the worst injury/infection/virus/disease/condition have they ever been faced with? Just a curious question =)
You can also tell me the worst medical problem you have encountered, with your own health.
Aww, poor baby! That must have hurt and on Christmas! What a present! And thanks, your daughter is beautiful as well!
My worst medical problem was after I had Kenley. I began hemorrhaging and I actually almost died because I had a stroke. But compared to what Kenley has been through, that is nothing!
That Gay Guy: I hope you are feeling better!

Oh my gosh! I'm sorry, but I'm glad to hear she's in remission. The worst I've had between my 4 kids so far is my 3-year-old (now 4) having to have surgery to repair a hydrocele (an opening in the intestines that allows fluid to fill the scrotum). My worst medical "problem" was having the babies!

Aww, I'm so sorry! It must have been hell to have to go through that :(

I was born with a triple heart defect: I had an atrial septal defect (a hole in my heart between the left and right atrii) and I also had a ventricular septal defect (a hole in my heart through the septal wall between the left and right ventricles). I also had a problem with the valve between the left atrium and left ventricle. They didn't expect me to survive, but I had open heart surgery at 6 months and miraculously I lived.

Then when I was six I had to have surgery to remove my adenoids because of chronic ear infections. While I was under anesthesia, I crashed and my heart stopped. Somehow they revived me and I lived.

I had throat surgery again last Wednesday to attempt to cure my OSA. My doctor performed UP3 surgery, which involves removing the tonsils and adenoids (they grew back, wth?) as well as the uvula and soft palate.

My children are now 29, 27, 24, and 11. We have not had much in the way of very serious health concerns. My 27 year old son was diagnosed with melanoma just before he turned 17. We have history of skin cancer in our family so when my middle daughter saw the mole that had turned black on her brother's back while putting on sun screen, we made an immediate appointment with our doctor. It was a very scary time when the call came in that the mole they removed was melanoma. He had to have surgery on his back to excise all the skin around the mole. Due to the position on his shoulder blade, they couldn't just cut around it, but had to do an elliptical shape skin removal. He has a rather impressive scar on his back, about 8 inches long. He also had some lymph nodes removed in his neck and under his arm as precautionary steps, but those came back clear which indicated that the cancer had not gone into his lymph system which is what makes melanoma deadly. He has monthly mole checks at home and yearly visits with his cancer doctor. It has been 10 years now, and there have been no further signs of problems.

I am so sorry to hear that! I hope that she is doing better. My storys are nothing compared but with my son he had his first febrile seizure at 3 months old. That was very scary. He has had several since he was born. He is 4 now. My daughter, who is 6, had someone step on her head at school and broke two baby teeth and 1 adult tooth. Myself, I woke up the day after my 21st birthday (which is how I remember the exact date) and I had to urinate so bad and I could not. Several tests later and still problems I had to have a bladder pace maker put in. Nothing too major here. Thank God but I will keep you and your family in my prayers.

The IWK is pleased to announce that seven-year-old Isaac Larson, from Saint John, New Brunswick, will be our 2010 Tree Lighter. Isaac has been a patient at the IWK Health Centre for most of the past year, and reports having received "more than 260 pokes" during that time. Isaac was diagnosed in February of 2010 with Juvenile Myelomonocytic Leukemia and travelled to Ontario this past summer for a bone marrow transplant. A dedicated Harry Potter fan, Isaac wonders if any "Daily Prophet" media will attend this year's Holiday Lighting!
