Can Feline Immunodeficiency Virus(FIV) and Feline leukemia virus (FeLV) be passed to a ferret?
My daughter wants to get a ferret, however we had a cat that we had to put down last year due to FIV and FELV and we still have a cat that we suspect might have one or both of these diseases. Before even considering getting a ferret, I need to know if FIV and/or FELV can be passed from cat to ferret.

There are no known cases of ferrets catching FIV, but there are some where ferrets have had FeLV. However, you can simply have the ferret vaccinated against FeLV and have nothing to worry about :] Just set up a vet appointment on the day you plan to get the ferret and visit the vet before going home.

i dont think its possible for a ferret to get those diseases since its supossed to be a feline type of issue and ferrets are not feline. In wikipedia it also says that it might be transmitted through scratches where theres direct contact between one cats saliva and another cats blood, so if you keep the ferret away from danger from the cat nothing should happen :)
hope this helps, and if you have any questions you can certaintly call a vet and ask them for more accurate info. goodluck!

both are specific to cats, and are not transmittable to dogs, ferrets, or other animals. Also you can have your other cat tested to know if they have the disease. Both of these virus's are short lived outside the host. Wash food and water bowls weekly and disinfect with a cap of bleach in a gallon of water. you can mop hardwood, tile or linoleum floors with the same mix and kill the virus on contact. Surprisingly, its been found that lysol spray also kills the virus and can be used on non washable surfaces such as furniture, and fabrics.
