Can I inherit leukemia?
My dad is 55 years old and is dying from AML leukemia. I am 19 years old and female. what are my chances of inheriting the cancer from him?
- George Z
No, leukemia can not be inherited.

Zero. Leukemia is not a genetically carried disease, as far as we know now. Your chances of developing is about the same as the general population. It is the most common Adult onset leukemia, and average onset age is 65. It affects more men than women. Hope this helps. Good luck and prayers to your and your family.

You can't inherit cancer, just a genetic predisposition for it. There are many other factors that come into place for cancer as well. Your chances increase if you have many ancestors or direct family members that have had cancer. There are also environmental issues at play.
Furthermore, luekemia isn't thought to be genetic.
In any case, don't stress about it. Stress kills!

You do have an increased chance of getting it, though no one knows for sure how leukemia is even contracted in the first place. Therefore there are no preventive measures that could be taken.
So, all you have is a slightly higher chance of getting it than some random person. That still means you could be perfectly healthy for the rest of your life while a random person, out of the blue, contracts it.
Some symptoms are:
> Swollen lymph nodes that usually don't hurt (especially lymph nodes in the neck or armpit)
>Fevers or night sweats
>Frequent infections
>Feeling weak or tired
>Bleeding and bruising easily (bleeding gums, purplish patches in the skin, or tiny red spots under the skin)
>Swelling or discomfort in the abdomen (from a swollen spleen or liver)
>Weight loss for no known reason
>Pain in the bones or joints
I hope this helps, and don't think about it too much!
