can a person donating bone marrow stem cells for a leukemia pt. be on medication?
I am a perfect match for my brother who has chronic leukemia, they give me an injection to build up something in my blood then donate this to him, however I began having a seizure problem, they want me to take Keppra, my seizures are rare, I can avoid taking the medication if I am carefull and get rest.

The shots are neupogen or neulasta. They are trying to build up your number of white blood cells.. the stem cells they need to collect are a type of white blood cell.
As far as that specific med I dont know but most meds would be ok. You need to talk to the doc to be sure. And anyways, if the shots and aphersis work properly you will be done in a few days.

The seizure medicine will not "pollute" or in any way influence the quality of the stem cells they will be harvesting for use in your brother. It is commendable that you are worrying about this but a conversation with your brother's Dr can assure you that there is no problem and that you should take the anti-seizure medicine prior to the SC harvest. Thanks to you for being a donor and good luck to your brother
