Medical costs are borne differently in different countries. Citizens of most developed nations have free medical care provided by their government. Citizens of Britain, France, Canada, and most developed nations pay nothing.

The United States is the great exception to this rule. America has no meaningful national health policy. Its citizens are dependent upon a confusing mixture of public and private health insurance schemes, but many have little or no coverage. Approximately 50 million Americans have no insurance whatsoever and another 50 million have inadequate insurance to cover catastrophic illness.

Leukemia is a complex and expensive disease to treat. Uninsured and under-insured Americans are often forced to delay, reduce, or go without needed medical treatment. It is an national tragedy that many Americans ignore or deny exists, until they become its victim.
