how do i go about setting up a donation fund for a leukemia patient's family?
A 9 year old girl, whom I am close to, just found out she has leukemia. I would like to help out this family and need to know if there are any legalities that I need to address in order to recieve these donations. I was hoping ppl would donate gas cards

start with your local banks. They should be able to set up an account for you to have all of the checks put into. Then you should get out fliers and have a benifit dinner for her. You will find that people are very generous at these types of events. Good luck

I am thinking that the best place to go for cash donations would be a local bank which can set up a 'donation' type account for the family. that should allow people who donate to have a tax write off as well (i think). the bank should be able to answer all your questions as I've seen families do this before. For things like gas cards and gift cards, maybe you can collect them or ask the families church if they attend one. On top of gas cards, people donated gift cards to favorite restaurants for my brothers family (his daughter has A.L.L. - acute lymphoblastic leukemia). Also, the family will be back and forth at the hospital alot. depending on the situation, i've seen close friends bring home cooked meals up to the hospital alot which is appreciated. this should always be coordinated with the family though as sometimes the child can not eat if they are waiting to take certain tests.
as the previous poster mentioned, i have seen other families set up benefit dinners and local businesses have been more than willing to contribute.
