If you have a normal white blood count, can you still have leukemia?
- Andy S
The word leukemia itself is derived from the Greek 'leukos' + 'aima' meaning 'white blood'. It really generically refers to cancer of the blood or bone marrow. Most people with leukemia have a high white blood count, yes. Some afflicted don't (some in fact have lower white blood counts). Another sign is not enough red blood cells. A lower level of platelets is also a good indication particularly in those cases with a normal or decreased white blood count.
Leukemia — Comprehensive overview covers symptoms, causes, risk factors, treatment of this blood-related cancer.
