Is the swelling of lymph nodes under the arm supposed to be painful?

Is the swelling of lymph nodes under the arm supposed to be painful?
If swelling of lymph nodes under the arm is a symptom of breast cancer, are the wollen lymph nodes supposed to be painful or pain-free? Also, are the swollen lymph nodes supposed to be red or colored, or colorless? Anyone know?

- Too much information
I haven't heard much about the swollen lymph nodes associated with breast cancer but I do know that swelling reddness tenderness or pain in a lymph node (or any where for that matter) is a sign of inflammation due to infection.

Usually, swollen lymph nodes can be tender to the touch and the skin can be a little red and warm in the area, just like when you get a bad cold and the lymph nodes in your neck are swollen. Lymphatic glands near the breast are located near the arm pit. Around the start of your period, lymph nodes in the arm pit can feel like small peas.

Swollen lymph nodes and breast cancer are not the same thing. Cancer is indicated by masses or tumors, while swollen lymph nodes indicate infection that your body is fighting.

Suspicious lumps in the breast are usually hard and are sometimes accompanied by pain and redness. Get it checked out anyway as soon as possible just in case.

I would go see your doctor immediately to get that checked out to be sure that is is nothing. Lymph nodes are the bodies filters for the garbage can the liver. When they become inflamed or swollen it means that they have turned on the bodies response system to fight a infection or symptom. I have never personally had a swollen lymph node that wasn't tender to some degree. I have never seen any swollen red nodes because they are mostly deep tissue anatomy. If your experiencing some kind of infection at the skin level it may be just some type of boil that needs a lancing As far as the pain is concerned My mom is a lymphoma cancer survivor and she had a very large swollen sausage size lymph node under her right arm that she described as a fire work that would go off (at night mostly). She said it would feel hot and very tender. We used to relieve her pain with cold wash clothes. I am in no means suggesting any diagnosis or anything of that sort I just know that sore throats are always tender around the nodes and i believe it is our bodies way of telling us that something is up . Best of luck with your situation and not to worry until you know what's up. Stay positive and get your node checked. Hope this was helpful.

If the swelling is due to infection then there may or may not be any pain present. Mumps are painful. Many infections affecting the throat cause painful lymph node swelling.

Lymph nodes swollen due to breast cancer are usually painless although your body may feel achy elsewhere besides the swollen node or nodes.

Lymph nodes as a rule have no color to them on the surface of the skin. If they are showing red color and swollen my advice to you is to go see your doctor as soon as possilbe. I was diagnosed with breast cancer in both breasts in February. I had a lump in each breast that was quite large 2 centimetes in size. about the size of a quarter. for a few months there was no pain but prior to the doctor finally admitting there were lumps there was a lot of discomfort in the right breast in the area of the lumps. After a modifidied radical mastectomy and removal of 14 lymph nodes.... I learned I had cancer in one breast and 8 of the 14 lymph nodes contained cancer..... I had no pain under my arm and was surprised and shocked to learn that so many of them were cancerous...... Please get checked now........
