Will getting my cat the leukemia shot hurt him if he already has it?
I am taking my cat to get fixed and to get his shots later this week. I was interested in getting the leukemia shot for him, but am a little worried. My kitten might have feline leukemia, and I was just wondering if it would be bad for him if i got him vaccinate if he already has the condition.
I haven't gotten him tested yet. I am not hoping that it will cure him, I am just wondering if it would hurt him if he already has the condition.

The shot isn't going to help cure the disease, it would be a waste of money. Have you gotten the cat tested or are you self diagnosing?

The wise thing to do is get him tested for FeLV and FIV. Indoor cats do NOT need the FeLV vaccine, as many cats have a bad reaction to it, and it is at best 80% effective only. It also has been implicated in injection site sarcomas. Getting him vaccinated won't cure the disease if he has it.

Do not give the shot whether or not he tests positive. My two purebred breeders will NOT give the FELV shot, nor do they recommend it (one is a vet) - its too many problems and only at-risk cats should consider it (those going outside). My breeders will void the health warrenty on the cats if they are given the shot.
