Driver Ed question; I may start driving again, what will I need to do to get a license in Illinois?

Driver Ed question; I may start driving again, what will I need to do to get a license in Illinois?
I am 21 and in college. I am in Northwest Illinois. I posted on Yahoo earlier that my dad, who told me after a miserable driver ed experience, in 2007, I had to never drive again four years ago, is now saying he wants me to drive again. He has a really bad leukemia and has chronic pain to where he can barely walk, sit, or stand; driving is hard for him as well. I have not driven a car since 2007, I have had to renew my permit two times (once in 2009 and once in 2010, last year, it will expire again in June, I will need to get it renewed again). I realize now, with my dad not doing so hot, that I may have to start driving again (scary thought because I did horrible job driving four years ago and was labeled a "maniac" on the road by my dad, I was out of control). I am nervous because I haven't done this in four years. Initially, before he got sick with the cancer, my dad wanted me to wait until I was 30 years old to start driving again, because the insurance cost would be really low. My dad was diagnosed with leukemia in December of 2009. But due to circumstances, things have changed. Now he is telling me to consider driving again.
My question, to anyone who knows anything about getting a license in Illinois, is what do I have to do to get a license to drive in Illinois? Here's whats going on:
My plan is that I am going to get the new copy of the Rules of the Road (2011) from the DMV here in Illinois. I am going to read the chapters, highlight, take notes, find a website that has practice questions. I am going to do this for a minimum 10 hours a day during the summer, not sure if I will have time for breaks. This is going to occur when I am done with school in early May. Is this a good idea? Do I need to do this?
I have not driven the car since 2007, I said this. I still have the permit, its labeled "Instruction permit" on there. Do I need to take a written test in order to start the driving again? I remember in driver ed, in order to get the permit, I had to take a multiple choice test that had about 15 questions on it. I flunked the first time that year in 2007, but I passed the second time. Will I need to take this test again even with this permit that I have, but renewed it twice now?
Back then, when I was 17, they said I needed a minimum 50 hours behind the wheel. Has this changed now that I am 21? I am thinking to practice driving for a minimum 100,000 hours
I used the school car to do the driving back in 2007, does the DMV have a car there to use with a brake pedal or am I going to have to use my dad's car to practice driving?
Does the process of getting a driver's license in Illinois take a REALLY long time?
What other things will I need to do if I have to drive again?
Any suggestions are welcome,
Thanks

No, DMV doesn't provide a car... you will need to use your dad's car... if you don't have access to his car... sign up for a privately owned Driving class... they should provide you with a car for your exam.
No, you shouldn't have to drive the 50 hours... and you sure don't have to practice for 100,000 hours. But it is a great idea! Driving is like riding a bike... you never forget how. Just make certain that you put safety first, and you'll be a great driver! )^_^)

Hello,

As long as you have your valid permit, you may practice driving with one of your parents, a legal guardian or a responsible adult approved by your parents sitting in the front seat. This adult must be at least age 21, have a license for the type of vehicle you are driving, and have at least one year of driving experience.

To be able to drive alone, you will need to take the 'behind-the-wheel' test. You won't need to re-take your written test if you do not let your permit expire, but considering the circumstances it would be really good for you to re-fresh your knowledge before driving again. So yes, study the book and try some tests - just to see how well you remember things:

The book can be found there, too, if you need one:
http://driving-tests.org/illinois/illinois-drivers-handbook-online/

You can find what documents you need to bring with you when you have practiced enough and are ready to apply for the license. Since you are 21, you won't need to provide parents' consent or driver's ed completion certificate.

Since summer is a busy season in examination centres, you might want to schedule your 'behind-the-wheel' test now - before your permit expires, and practice until then. No, DMVs do not provide cars for the test - so, if you feel the examiner should have that extra brake pedal, you might try renting the car from a driving instructor or school. Here is what you need to practice for your test:

Again, all the details are in the handbook. Good luck!
