If my chemotherapy works, how long will it take for my leukemia to go into remission?

I have acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL), and I'm scheduled for chemo next week. I'm 16, if that helps.

It should only take about 4 weeks before a bone marrow biopsy can tell what effect the chemo had on the leukemia. Hopefully it'll be in remission. If not, they'll just hit it with more chemo until it does go into remission. But if it doesn't go into remission on the first treatment, they'll probably look into a bone marrow transplant due to the aggressiveness of the cancer. Your cytogenetics are also a factor to how well your body will react to the chemo. The higher the cyto the better you'll respond to the chemo.

The fact that you have APL is a good thing.

Well, relatively speaking. Nobody chooses leukemia. but if you DO have to choose, that's the one to pick. It's the most cureable.

In about 10 years of working in bone marrow transplant, I've only had about 5 patients with APL. They just don't need our services very often!

Hi (: and i just knew that like the person above me said, APL is one of the easier to treat. Stay strong!
