Low platelet count and low white blood cell count.?
I went in for a routine exam which included a blood test. The first test came back that my platelets were low so she did a follow up to make sure the results were accurate. The second test confirmed the low platelet and showed a low white blood cell count as well. I am 26 years old and feel fairly healthy I guess. I don't have swollen lymph or spleen, and I have no bruising or abnormal bleeding. The two things I do have is poor circulation and fatigue. Since I have found out about my low counts I have had shortness of breath probably from fear. The possible causes of this seem grim. Does anyone have any idea of what this could be besides Lupus, or leukemia, or any other life threatening illness? I have an appointment with a hematologist on tuesday.

Pancytopenia evaluation includes bone marrow toxins and the biggest of those is alcohol but medications can also do that. Environmental toxins can do that and so occupational exposures need to be looked into.
The lupus you mention refers to peripheral consumption of the white cells and platelets do due autoimmune disease.
The examination of the peripheral blood smear along with a bone marrow can detect abnormal decreased bone marrow production or if the bone marrow is increasing production then it points to peripheral destruction of circulating white cells and platelets as the cause.
Leukemia — Comprehensive overview covers symptoms, causes, risk factors, treatment of this blood-related cancer.
