Question about Leukemia and WBC?
Hi, I had a CBC done and I was just curious. I have always heard that high WBC count is a sign of leukemia and mine was a little low (though within range). But I looked online and it said that low WBC count can be a sign of leukemic blasts. Can someone please clear this up for me? (By the way, my neutrophils a bit low and monos/basals?? a bit high.) My doctor told me not to worry, but I would like to know. Also, what are the symptoms of leukemic blasts? Right now I have a cold, which could probably lower WBC because it's viral?? It's all Greek to me...Thank you in advance for your help.

High WBC could be due to an infection viral or bacterial. For your doctor to make sure that cancer is a possibility he has to look for cancer markers but im sure that your probably fine.

Listen, if you have a cold, and your WBC are slightly low, then you should have them rechecked in 10-14 days after the cold is over to be sure they come back to normal. Usually, if you have leukemia, you feel sick as a dog.

Leukemia can present with high or low WBCs. Most patients present with infection, fatigue, sometimes bleeding, bone pain. Many bugs cause your WBC to drop with infection so wouldn't worry too much. Would recommend getting rechecked within few weeks to be safe.

When white blod cell count is HIGH it means body is fighting infections...usually.
How is your hemoglobine and platelet level? Those are key too.
My advice to you is do not take this lightly, as the doctor seems to suggest. My family doctor told that to my mom, when some of her counts (I think hempglobine) were a bit off..she was diagnosed with leukemia some months after.
In your case it may be NOOOOTHING!!!! Just keep an eye on the counts, repeat them in 1 month..for couple months. If nothing changes...eh, you don't probably have anything.
