What are the chances that a stray cat has feline leukemia?

What are the chances that a stray cat has feline leukemia?
A cat just showed up at my house and I think it was abandoned. I fed it and gave it something to drink but I have 2 cats of my own so I'm worried about letting it in to keep warm because I don't know if it has cat leukemia. What are the chances that it does have it and what should I do?

I'm not sure of the chances, but the best way to tell is to have it tested for it if you are willing to invest in having the cat tested. If it turns out to be positive you can make a make shift "kitty house" for it on your porch with hay and blankets for it. I can say that I've rescues 6 cats strays who don't have leukemia or kitty aids, if that is any comfort to you.

Depending on where you live, about 40%. Also worry about FIV, which is about 15%. Both require a body fluid exchange to transmit, so if you want to let the cat in, just keep it in a separate room away from your cats. That is the best thing to do when bringing a new cat into your household, anyway.

If you want to bring in the cat first make a vet appointment and have it checked over a simple blood test will tell you if the cat has feline leukemia. Then you put the cat in a room to its self and introduce them slowly. Thank you for caring for this cat. You have a good heart.

the chances are high, especially since he's a stray. infection can be passed from cat to cat easily, so you need to keep him away from your cats until he is tested.

Out door cats have more of a tendency to get feline leukemia than indoor cats. If you have any intentions of adding this cat to the cats you already have, I advise you to put the cat in a carrier when it's still out doors and take it to a vet and have it checked out. That way you will know for sure and don't have to worry about this. Either way if you decide to take the cat into your home for a little warmth and food and decide to keep the cat you'll still need to take it to a vet for shots and a good check up. If you have no intentions of keeping the cat, then take it to a shelter to be adopted out.
