Can anyone tell me what is the prognosis and survival rate of Acute Myelogenous Leukemia?

For adults or children? I think Children fare much better with AML than adults. Every adult I know except 1 with AML ultimately died, usually within 5 years (I have known just maybe between 15 and 20). If the person is under 65, bone marrow transplant is the best chance for durable remission, but the morbidity associated with this treatment is substantial. Many people die from the treatment itself.

The treatment (chemotherapy) is very intense, and patients are left with little to no immunity from infections. The chemo can also cause other problems like heart failure. There is a high relapse rate and in most cases bone marrow transplant is the only option. This comes at a risk too cause if the cancer comes back shortly after transplant there is nothing that can be done for the patient.

How ever my daughter was diagnosed in 05 at age 6 and is doing great, still in remission, but she has had to cope with some of her hospital room mates dying ( 3 of them after transplant with reoccurring cancer). The only survival rate I know is 60% of children make it, this is what we were told when our daughter was diagnosed.

Its not a death sentence, it depends on the person. The subtype of AML they have and how far advanced the cancer was to begin with. For more info, do a yahoo search for AML for either adult or children as the cancer affects them differently.

A few years ago my mom was diagnosed with AML. She's undergone chemo (standard) induct & consolid and now she's fine. We pray to God she stays like this. In situations like this, is depends a lot on your FAITH in God. My mom is thinking positively, prays and puts all her faith in the mercy of God and of the Holy Mary. Sounds very religious:)..but my mom is here.

From what I've read of this disease, the best Cancer Centers would be in Austin and New York. But any of the MAJOR cancer clinics would probably be ok. The prognosis..it depends on age, general health of the patient, how he/she responds to chemo..Some people get well, others require different treatment. In case of a bone marrow transplant, it's probably important to ask the hospital what type of genetic testing they perform to find the donor (there are some more advanced), how many transplant (that particular type) they have performed and what was the survival rate?

BUT Don't think too much of statistics, just have FAITH and patience and stay with your parent, love him/her and help them keep a positive attitude. It's hard for us as children to feel we have no control over what's happening..in one of my unhappiest days I was wondering around the streets, in my car..and I stopped at a church..and there was a booklet about coping. It just calmed me down in the sweetest, most pure manner, taking about acceptance of what is going on, unyelding hope, patience and "Let go and let God."

Best wishes! Never lose hope in the mercy of God!
