Feline Leukemia to a dog?

Feline Leukemia to a dog?
I know this is a little gruesome but here is what happened. We buried this cat for a lady that tested positive for feline leukemia. My dogs dug the cat up and was chewing and eating it. Is it possible that my dogs could catch the virus?
I stopped them after i found them chewing on it.

ummmm..... im not sure what to say...... why would you let your dog eat a dead cat?!?!?!?!? now that i cannot fathom....

No. Feline leukemia is only transmitted through felines so your dog, being a canine, can not get the disease from any cat although eating a decaying animal may cause digestive upset for your dog.

I am providing a link that looked at the viability of the virus. I suspect the virus would no longer be viable.

But more to the point, feline leukemia is specific to felines, and not canidae (dogs). Since leukemia infects blood cells, there are sufficient differences between cat and dog blood cells to assuage (relieve) your concerns.

No, they call it FELINE leukemia for a reason. It doesn't afffect any other species, so your dogs can't catch it. If the cat was put down, there might be some residual drugs in there that aren't that great for them, so it wouldn't hurt to call your vet. But I don't think you need to rush them to an emergency clinic.
