High WBC count in 3-month-old?
Okay here's the thing:
My three-month-old son has been in and out of the hospital for the last month, because of a high fever and EXTREMELY high white blood cell (WBC) count.
He has been tested for everything from leukemia to meningitis to staph infections, and all of his blood work and cultures have come back negative.
He was on antibiotics for 3 days the first time, and 4 days the second time. This last time, his WBC started dropping after the 4th day, and his spinal fluid was clear, so they sent him home.
But, at his follow-up appointment yesetrday, his WBC was back up YET again, in the 30 range, and he had a mild fever of around 100 degrees (which is now gone, without the help of tylenol or ibuprofen) and I have to take him back on Monday to have it re-checked.
Has anybody had this problem? If so, what did it turn out to be? The doctors are completely stumped on this one, because aside from the high white count and frequent fevers, my son is healthy as a horse. He's eating, playing, sleeping, laughing, smiling, doing all of the normal baby stuff, and all of his other blood work has been normal straight across the map.
This really worries me, because it seems like an infection that just won't go away. But without other symptoms they say they can't figure out what it is in order to further treat him. They have me in a "holding pattern" so to speak, after consulting with doctors at the University of Kentucky hospital, who are supposedly the best doctors in the state. His pediatrician is coordinating with two infectious disease doctors, one bone marrow expert, and one childhood diseases expert from UK.
NONE of them have a clue. Any thoughts?

Sounds like something from "Mystery Diagnosis" on TV. It may take a long time to figure it out, all they can do meanwhile is keep him comfortable (supportive care). I know it's hard, just try to be patient (but don't give up, be aggressive with the doctors to keep searching). Hopefully they will find out what it is soon.

Without anymore symptoms this is incredibly difficult!
My concern would have been lukemia but your doctors have tested for that.
Has the baby been around anyone who has been to any tropical countries? Or have you been anywhere tropical because it does sound like it maybe a tropical disease.
If you notice anymore symptoms or anything at all that may help email me antbourne@mobileemail.vodafone.net and I will be happy to help but unfortunately theres not much more I can do without anything further
