if patients with leukemia have high/increased white blood cell count, then why are they prone to infection?
pls. help me find an answer for my assignment. thanks!
- kind
though wbc count is higher
but THESE WBC ARE NOT HEALTHY.
THESE ARE NOT MATURE
these are not able to fight infection

it is not the question of quantity but quality!
the w.b.c.'s are abnormal and not mature. therefore, are not capable of synthesising antibodies, eating up bacteria and mounting up cell mediated immune response---this leads to uncontrolled infections.the bone marrow function is also compromised---red cells and platlet counts go down, leading to bleeding tendency and anaemia, further lowering the immunity[body resistance].

...simply because the hemoglobin of the red blood cells is what builds the immune system...something the white blood cells are lacking in...
That's it...no other reason...!

When you get just the wbc count, the number is very high. But when you do a differential count, all the different types of wbcs are 0. They are all misformed, so none of them are doing their job.
Also, chemo treatment for leukemia targets the blood and bone marrow. So the treatment kills off almost all white blood cells and platelets, and most hemoglobin. So, the patient is high risk for infection, high risk for bleeding, as well as severly anemic, which leaves you high risk for not getting enough o2

It's because the cells are not healthy and don't function properly. Alot are mutated.

Aidan McSpadden - Happy 2nd Birthday Aidan
Welcome to Angels for Aidan How the Journey began . . . The McSpadden family made a visit to the pulmonologist at the Texas Childrens Clinical Care unit on June 18, 2010 after battling a flu virus and mild pneumonia for about a week. The doctor felt like little Aidan's breathing was rapid and the x-ray showed a slight pneumonia in the left lung, so she admitted him to the hospital to get some fluids and antibiotics. The admission process took us through the ER, where labs were drawn. The doctors came in to tell Kelli and I the blood test came back abnormal. This obviously raised a concern with us when she stated that his white blood cell count came back extremely high. They then resent the blood work to be tested again. Upon completion of the retest, we were told that Aidan had Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). We were then admitted to the ICU to get the infection under control. Later that evening, one of the head oncologist stopped by to inform us that some of the additional tests were inconclusive for a diagnosis of AML. After 5 days of testing and still not knowing if our son had cancer, doctors confirmed AML through bone marrow aspiration. For those of you who do not know us, our son Aidan, who is only 17 months old, has been the joy of our life. We were still in shock and spent most of the first two days praying and crying. Through the tremendous support of family, friends, coworkers, and even those who we have not had the pleasure of meeting, we have started on a path ...
