I'm writing a story about a girl with leukemia? HELPP?
This is for a class assignment. I'm writing a story about a girl with leukemia. The story never tells if she dies or not, but I would like some ideas for what to have the doctor to say, like if it's getting worse. What tests would be ran if they were trying to see if she had it? Like a blood count test? Would it be low or high if she had leukemia? I'd like some early off symptoms and maybe some that came later, and names of other tests and things that would happen. Like what would happen if she was getting worse. Would she get chemo right away? What are the side-effects comes with that and how quickly?

i suggest you read/watch my sister's keeper. its about a girl who is born just to give her

I'm a APL (Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia) Survivor. I was 13yrs old when diagnosed with the disease and had a Bone Marrow Transplant at 17yrs old.
There are tests like:
CBC - A CBC counts the number of white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets in a blood sample. A sample of blood with high numbers of white blood cells and low levels of red blood cells or platelets can indicate leukemia, and abnormal liver and kidney function tests will tell the doctor if leukemia has affected those organs. One very important test that allows doctors to look specifically for blasts in a blood sample is flow cytometry. Flow cytometry also allows doctors to examine the physical characteristics of the blasts, allowing for more precise diagnosis.
Bone Marrow Biopsey -A bone marrow biopsy or aspiration is done in in the doctor's office. The doctor asks the patient to lie on his or her side and nurses clean the biopsy site with iodine or alcohol. After the site is cleaned, the biopsy site is numbed with a local anesthetic. The doctor uses either a very fine needle to draw out only bone marrow tissue, or a thicker needle to take a small sample of bone and bone marrow. The bone marrow sample is examined under a microscope to check for leukemia cells. (I feels kinda like you hit your funny bone... it stings when it goes into the bone and the next 2--5 days it feels bruised so it's sore)
Scans and X-rays
MRIs (Magnetic Resonance Imaging), CT (Computerized Axial Tomography) scans, and x-rays are all technologies that use various machines to take pictures of bones, organs, and tissues inside the body. In the case of CT scans and MRIs, the technician has the patient lie down on a table that moves into a tube. CTs and MRIs build detailed 3-D pictures that can be examined by the doctor from any angle. In an x-ray, a patient is positioned so that two-dimensional pictures can be taken of the body. These images are interpreted by a radiologist and the images and a written report are sent back to the doctor. Scans and x-rays allow doctors to visually pinpoint problem areas within the body, and locate areas of infection.
Im sure you can find more just Google around there's tons of info out there...
I'll give you an example what my symptoms were... etc..
I was getting pale... (low blood count and platelets)
I had random bruises on my body...
I had something that was called Petechiae, (is blood leaking into your skin from tiny little capillaries just under your skin. This blood leakage causes tiny red skin dots, little red skin spots or a pinpoint red rash symptoms to appear.)
Petechia dots routinely emerge in the lower leg region, but you can experience red spot distribution all over. Its red pinpoint rash can materialize very quickly or slowly over time.
The predominate cause of red skin spots petechiae is thrombocytopenia.
Actually if you want me to email you about my experience to help with your story I will... I was writing alot but to put it down it maybe too long ha ha... anyhow... if not if you just want to know symptoms of chemo... or side effects of chemo etc... just let me know an i'll letcha know... good luck with your story...
