Is Leukemia genetic?
A family that I am very close to was hit hard with Leukemia. The 2nd youngest was diagnosed when she was 2 1/2 and recovered. Years later the oldest daughter was diagnosed and had relapsed once and had a bone marrow transplant. Very shortly after that their father was diagnosed. They say there is a cluster where they live (Sierra Vista, AZ) but the rest of the family (3 others) have been perfectly fine. Is this genetic or really a cluster?

They generally believe that all and cll are heredectic while aml and cml are not, and the rarer types are.
Its all genetic bc essentially leukmia is caused by a genetic mutation in the dna.
However, I am the 5th person in my extended family to have leuekmia. All of us except my great aunt are/were aml and she is cml.
There are studies now bc of situations like mine and others that are beginning to say that all types may be hereditary. I dont have links for any such info, though yu could check www.leukemia-lymphoma.org

They are still doing research on whether or not it is genetic. they do seem to think it is though. My son has ALL and is in remission, but hey tested his twin when he was diagnosed, and again later just because he looked anemic. They told me that any family with a leukemia patient in it is at higher risk of developing the disease, especially siblings. I am sorry your friends have been hit so hard with the disease it is hard to deal with just one person you love suffering let alone so many. I will be praying for them.
