Cat AIDS is actually called FIV virus and isn't transmitted the same as human AIDS. If one cat in household has it almost all will. We suspect most of my cat's have had it. Cat leukemia or FeLV is trasmitted from cat to cat too. Both are virus'. They also both have shots and can be prevented but, there is no total cure for either. Although if Mom has it the kids will too.
Sounds like your cat had FeLV. The second link below.
The sites I've sited have lot's more info for you

Feline Aids and luekemia are both preventable diseases with vaccinations. It't probably too late for your cat now and your vet will tell you the best possible treatment/outcome for her. Your vet will need to carry out a blood test on your cat to diagnose. If you have other cats, then they will need a blood test too and preventative treatment if they have not contracted the diseases.
In future prevent these diseases with enrollment into a vaccination program when they are kittens and follow up with a booster every year after.
I see so many pets needlessly destroyed because owners can't be bothered to have them vaccinated... and please don't do the "I can't afford to" whine. If you can't afford to take care of your pet properly then don't have one until you can.

A blood test taken by your vet would have confirmed this.
Every cat that my mom traps is nutered, spayed, and tested for aids and a lot of otherthings before they are released no sick cat is ever put back.
People cant get aids from a cat, but other cats can.
we have all our cats vaxed for everything
