What could cause a cat to have dangerously low Red Blood Cell percentage?
He should have 36% but he only has 12% and he has been unresponsive to a blood transfusion. Here is a full description of what has been going on:
Okay so he was not going to the bathroom and eventually I woke up and just saw him staring at me, which is abnormal for him cause normally he'll just jump up and sleep on the couch cushion behind me. So my mom took him to the vet and it turns out he had an obstruction in his urinary tract, so the vets gave him fluids and put a catheter in his peewee. So they took it out after a while but it re-blocked, then they repeated the process and it re-blocked a second time. The vet said he had crystals in his pee. So now his red blood cell percentage has also dropped down to 12 when it should be 36. They tried a blood transfusion but it was unresponsive
This has all occurred over the last six days.
We took him to the vet but they too are having trouble identifying the cause they think it could be Feline Leukemia or an Auto-Immune Disease.
Oh ya they considering cutting of his penis.
Description of my cat:
He was only like two months old when I got him because his mother went missing and so some construction peoples sent him to the vets office to be taken care of and I just so happened to adopt him. Normal cat length hair (not too short not too long) he is black and white, kind of like a cow, light green eyes, and its unusually friendly to everyone for a cat.
My cat is only 5 years old, what could it be that my cat has?

It definitely does sound like feline leukemia. I do not know the prognosis of the cat, and it would be best if you talked to the vet about it, but it sounds something like that. I hope that this helps you.
- Hello Cow How Are You?
When cats get their penises cut off, it's not that bad.
Mine got his off after he had lots of blockages like yours is. I really wasn't happy with it because I thought he would be an angry boy for basically turning him into a girl. He can't be happier! We can feed him all his favorite cat foods and he doesn't even notice that he has a hole instead of a penis. :)
Get a full blood workup done on him, and make sure our check kidney and liver function as well.
To me, it sounds like you didn't catch his blockage fast enough and the toxins built up in his system.
When you get his urinary tract under control, put him on a blended diet of these two foods:
Royal Canin SO (feline)
Royal Canin Control Formula (feline)
They are a little spendy $ 50 for a 20 pound bag, but it is the only food that will keep your kitty from being blocked. I recommend both types because the control formula tastes better, and the SO offers enough "acid" to keep the urine PH in check to prevent crystals.

Okay you have few different issues going on so one at a time..
If he keeps blocking you can "make him a girl" this will totally fix the problem,,if your vets are good this is a surgery that should have no complications. Was the cat totally blocked? Inbetween the 2 different blockages..did you have the cat on the prescription food that he should have been on?
The red blood count is very low..was your cat ever tested for feline leukemia??? This SHOULD BE DONE. It can be done in the vets office..IF YOUR VETS "THINK" IT COULD BE LEUKEMIA AND NEVER TESTED HIM FOR IT IN THE OFFICE YOUR VETS SUCK. Rather then to keep going on treating this cat for the blockages and wondering what's wrong..a simple drop of blood in the office on a "combo" test can give you the answer.
IF the cat tests positive i'm sorry to say there is nothing you can do at this point.
Here's what you need to do...
Call a vet..please a different vet cause the one your using doesn't know anything obvioulsy and keeps taking your money and not fixing the cat.
Get a combo felv/fiv test done..if it's negative then we go from there to find out what's wrong but for now you have to do that first.
I'll be able to help you more when i know that answer.

Anemia can be caused by parasites, did the vet do a poop check for parasites/worms? Severe flea bites can cause anemia, it could be feline leukemia which your cat should have been tested for when he had his initial visit when you first got him. Has he been eating and pooping normally? Did he loose alot of blood with the catheterizing? It is possible he hemorrhaged during the procedure?
You say he was given blood, how soon after did the repeat CBC be done. You have to wait for the blood to get in the system .
Work on the anemia first as it is at a critical stage for your cat. I would also get a SECOND OPINION ASAP. Do you have a vet school in the university near you? Call them bring his results along to the appointment no matter where you go for the 2nd opinion. It is critical to your pets life he be checked out again.
Worry about surgery later, he is to weak to have it now and how many of those types of surgeries has your vet done successfully? Good luck to your pet!

Feline leukemia, most likely, is he eating, drinking and using the bathroom?
Is he's gums whitish, and the inside of his eyes also whitish? If so he's definitely anemic.
Did the vet tested him for leukemia? ask if he can have feline aids, see the treatments could help him for awhile, but eventually you would have to put him to sleep, any of this things could kill him because I don't believe they have a cure for none of this diseases. I have lost cats to both leukemia and aids, and (this aids is not transmissible to humans) it's a lot of suffering to
see your pet go through the treatments, and improve for a short time only. Be aware that some vets do not have compassion they would be treating these pets and don't tell that there's no cure. My heart goes out to you both your cat and you,
In the end you still loose your beloved pet and end up with an BIG bill.
I would just ask for some strait answers from your vet and have some test done to know for sure what to expect, like what are the odds of he recuperating and how much his treatment cost would be.
If the tests for the disease come back negative, them what he has is kidney disease and that is treatable, the vet will put him in an diet called CD is a food they sell at the vet's and he has to eat it for the rest of his life, if he stops he can have blockage again, and believe me to unblock it cost me $ 700,00 a couple of years ago. so keep him in the diet. In fact he should be eating it right now not the dry one but the canned one and ask the vet about giving him some iron to help boost his blood red cells count,
I never heard of cutting the penis ,only of shortening the urethra I believe its what's called to make it easy to pass the Christal's, see with the CD food he will not have Christal's anymore. good luck.
