Anemia is actually quite normal in a leukemia patient. Blood is made in the bone marrow. In leukemia, the bone marrow goes bananas and decides to make mostly white cells, and does not make very many of the other cells. Your friend will probably look pale, have very little energy, and need transfusions to keep her body going while she undergoes treatment. White cells in the spinal fluid is a sign of certain types of leukemia. I found a website for you that may answer more of your questions.

Best of luck you and your friend.

Leukemia and Anemia are both conditions of the blood.

Anemia describes a condition where either the red blood cells are not being produced in sufficient numbers, or they are lacking some key element like heme (iron).

Leukemia describes a condition where a person's white blood cells are attacking their own body, each other, or other body elements that would otherwise not be so affected. This condition is also described as cancerous white cells because the DNA in these cells have mutated and is reflected in abnormal growth patterns of those cells.

When we define cancer, we are talking about the mutation of DNA in the nucleus of the affected cells. This mutation causes abnormal growth and metabolism, rendering the cells insufficient to produce their necessary function.

All body cells provide certain functions. Let's take white blood cells for instance. These cells are highly specialized cells that actually control our immune system. If they are dysfunctional, our immune system will suffer, and irreparable damage may occur that results in death.

Many types of Leukemia are now fully treatable. This was not the case just a few years ago. So your friend has a much better chance at survivial as long as treatment is rendered early enough.

Because red and white blood cells both eminate from the same hemocytoblast (blood stem cell) that are produced in your bone marrow, people that suffer Leukemia oftentimes also suffer Anemia.

However, there is more. Because your friend is experienceing an accumulation of white blood cells around their spinal cord, there is also a pathology associated with it. In other words, something has infected the spinal cord of this person.

White blood cells are there to attack and kill off any foreign invader before it can do harm to the system. We always see accumulations of white blood cells in these instances. But because your friend suffers from Leukemia, the white blood cells are not efficient at their job. So your friend may also require medical attention not only for their Leukemia, but also for their spinal infection.

Hope that helps answer your questions!

"Anemia" is a general term for a condition where a person's blood has lost the ability to carry oxygen.

"Leukemia" is one of four specific cancerous diseases where malformed blood cells are produced by a person's own body. Malformed cells take the place of the healthy cells causing a variety of problems.

Anemia and leukemia are associated because a person suffering from this disease has their healthy blood cells destroyed. Anemia can be one of the symptoms of leukemia because eventually, when the healthy cells are lessened, the body loses its ability to transport the necessary oxygen and removed accumulated waste.
