the black plague, or the bubonic plague. it was indirectly spread by the Mongols when they conquered like half of Asia. When the plague came around, it killed one third of Europe and 'witches' were thought to be the cause of the plagues and deaths.

one thing that has been hypothesized, as far as the "witches" themselves, is that there was a cause for the women to have hallucinations and act strangely other than "witchery/witchcraft"-- ergot poisoning.

Rye and rye bread (popular basic in the diet at the time) is prone to a fungus that when ingested can cause all sorts of problems, including hallucinations and convulsions.

Of the most serious diseases, typhus was common at this time. Sufferes would have a high fever, headaches, and dizziness. smallpox was another deadly disease that ravaged the colonies, an outbreak in the 1670s killed one fifth of the population of Boston. smallpox also causes a high fever, and a rash of large spots. People who survived the disease werre often disfigured by 'pock-marks' when they recovered. Diptheria was another serious disease that was common at this time (known as 'putrid fever') it caused a mucous membrane to form in the throat which caused difficutly in breathing, it was something that children often died from. Consumption (tuberculosis) was another common deadly disease, causing coughing and bleeding from the lungs and weakness. Measles was another common disease that although not as lethal as smallpox could often be deadly in those days. it caused a high fever and a red rash.

There had been a wave of diseases at the time of the Salem witch trials, disease was one of the many things that could trigger a witch hunt, witch hunts normally occured when conditions were bad due to disease, crop failures, etc. People began looking for scapegoats.

Breakthroughs in Imaging Neurovascular Diseases

Google Tech Talk September 16, 2010 Breakthroughs in Imaging Neurovascular Diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis: Technical Aspects, Clinical Ramifications, and Understanding the Etiology of the Disease. Presented by Dr. E. Mark Haacke. ABSTRACT Magnetic Resonance Imaging has long been an important diagnostic tool for Multiple Sclerosis. Recent developments linking MS to venous malformations have highlighted the use of advanced techniques for imaging iron deposits and blood flow. We introduce here a number of new technical image acquisition and image processing concepts whose application may well extend into other diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, stroke and traumatic brain injury. Finally, the development and data mining of worldwide data in specific diseases will also be discussed. ABOUT THE AUTHOR E. Mark Haacke is a world renown MRI researcher at Wayne State University. He won the Gold Medal in Kyoto in 2004 for his work on Susceptibility Weighted Imaging and Education. He is the past president of two MRI societies and has just formed "The International Society for Neurovascular Disease". For the last 30 years, Dr. Haacke has focused on the physics and mathematics associated with the technical development of new imaging methods and their clinical applications.
