What does it mean when your monocytes are high and the doctor schedules you to see an oncologist.?
A close friend of mine had his annual physical recently and bloodwork turned up a low white blood cell count and very high monocyte level. Immediately the doctor refers him to an oncologist. So what's going on. He feels fine, has plenty of energy. Is active and has no odd growths or unusual symptoms.
Anybody have any experience with this? My online search vaguely points me in the direction of lymphoma, leukemia, or multiple myeloma. But, it's not convincing to me at this point. What do you think?

Hodgkin's?
When my friend got it in '75 one day we were fishing the next he was dead, much more treatable now if that's it.

I think your friend needs to see his oncologist. You could help him by writing down questions he needs to ask the oncologist. Unless he has someone else going to the appointment with him, I hope he will allow you to go and take notes. I like for someone to go to appointments with me because together we stand a much better chance of remembering what was said, and make notes for what to ask next time. I hope your friend gets good news from the oncologist!

It is a very strong indication of cancer - and of cancer in an advanced stage. It does not matter what you think; you're not an M.D. The referring physician will have taken other signs and symptoms into account. Your "close friend" will need to keep the appointment and will need all the support he can get from family and friends.
