Do I have leukemia or anemia? How long can I go without knowing I have it?
I have been feeling very ill lately. Its been really hard for me to concentrate and I have been having severe headaches everyday (they last for almost 2 to 3 hours). I have been feeling weak and and very sleepy. I went to the doctor 2 months ago and i got my results 2 weeks ago. Tbey said I had low iron in my blood and that I would have to take iron supplements. But the thing is I dont know how long I have had low iron and I have not taken medications for it yet. Could it have gotten worse? Last night I got a sharp pain in the center of my chest that was super painful I have never felt anything like it before. I have been having aches all over it feels like either its my muscels or my bones. Could it be severe anemia or possibly siigns of leukemia?

These are all signs of anemia. And, it was foolish to not start the iron supplements are recommended by your physician which has allowed this condition to persist. It doesn't matter how long you have had this. What you need to do now is to treat it as was recommended and then in about 3 months, have a repeat blood test done to see if there has been any improvement in your anemia.

First take your iron pills You don't have leukemia because the original tests would have ruled that out. It doesn't matter how long you've been sick, what matters is how long you're going to stay sick because you won't follow the treatment plan. After taking the pills for two months, if you still don't feel well, go back to the doctor and possibly ask for a referral for a hematologist (blood specialist). There's no point going to the Doctor with your symptoms now because they can only repeat the same tests with the same results and the same prescription. Come back and post your question again then.

It is unlikely that you have anemia if your blood tests only 2 months ago were normal. However, it is not impossible-you should go back to the doctor to get another blood test. Also, if you had leukemia, you would probably be noticing extra bleeding from you gums when you brush your teeth, as well as the characteristic sign of multiple bruises on your body where you did not get hit.

Christine: Leukemia Treatment
Christine had a blood test to find out why she was so tired. She discovered that she was dangerously anemic and was sent to the emergency room for a blood transfusion before discovering that she had leukemia. She began treatment at Norris Cotton Cancer Center in Lebanon for bone marrow biopsies and chemotherapy. "It was there that I met Dr. Mary Chamberlin. When Dr. Mary walked into my room, I knew immediately that she was my angel, sent to help me through my leukemia. After nearly five weeks at DHMC, I was able to go home, but I still wanted to see Dr. Chamberlin. I would have moved to continue in her care! Fortunately, Dr. Chamberlin provided outreach care in Springfield, Vt., so I traveled from Alstead to see her there. Last year, I began seeing her at the Kingsbury Pavilion here in Keene. Dr. Mary has it all—knowledge, love, drive, compassion. She takes time to talk—and to listen. She's everything a doctor should be. Having that kind of doctor makes it so much easier. On the anniversary of my diagnosis, Dr. Chamberlin sent me a card. She made me look at my cancer in a different way. I'm in a good place now because I'm healthy. I feel alive again. Cancer gave me a second look at life—I'm more giving, more spiritual, kinder, more patient. All I want to do now is to give of myself. I want to give back."
