White blood cells increase when there is an infection. WBC;s are responsible for stopping virus's and infections and thats why they increase when there is an infection. A low blood count can also be numerous diseases. The technical term for Low WBC is Leukopenia, which means lack of WBC's. With a low WBC, you have a greater risk of infection due to a compromised immune system and you should see a doctor and have more tests to find out why you have a low WBC.

You probably shouldn't worry. The nurse said a bit so there shouldn't be too much of a concern. If the doctor or nurse felt that it should be attended to, they would have said something.

Often when you are sick, initially white blood cell count within the body increases due to the fact that the body is trying to combat "foreign matter" in the body. But illness can cause these levels in the body to fluctuate. The tooth may have also played a role. White blood cells are active in the presence of a tooth infection.

Some serious things that could cause low whiteblood cell count would be radiation, bone marrow infection (tumor, fibrosis), and even toxins within the body.

But again don't worry. I'm pretty sure your ok. If there was concern, they probably would have said something. If your infliction doesn't show any sign of improvement, perhaps see the doctor again. If you need reassurance, ask about your white blood cell count. Normal values are between 4200~10000 cells per μm(micrometer) I believe. And this is give or take. Perhaps she meant on the lower end of the scale? Ask your doctor or nurse if you should be concerned. They are proffesionals and they are the ones that analyzed your results. They should be able to give you the best answer.

Good luck and get better!

WHEN YOUR WBC'S ARE HIGH YOU USUALLY HAVE SOME SORT OF INFECTION. IF YOU ARE WORRIED ABOUT INFECTION, DON'T. BUT BE CONCERNED ABOUT HAVING LOW WBC'S BECAUSE THIS MEANS YOUR BODY'S IMMUNE SYSTEM IS NOT READY FOR "ATTACK" AGAINST ANY UNKNOWN PATHOGENS "GERMS". FOLLOW UP WITH YOUR DOCTOR AND LET HIM/HER KNOW YOUR CONCERNS. YOU MAY NEED MORE BLOOD WORK.ALSO CONSIDER AN HIV TEST. USUALLY YOU WOULD HAVE MORE WBC'S WITH COUGH AND SORE THROAT. IT SEEMS LIKE YOUR DEFENSE SYSTEM IS LOW CHECK IT OUT IMMEDIATELY. YES. LEUKEMIA DO MEAN LOW WBC'S BUT DON'T WORRY, FOLLOW UP WITH MORE BLOOD WORK AND DON'T BE SCARED TO ASK YOUR DOCTOR PLENTY OF QUESTIONS THEY ARE REQUIRED TO ASWER ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS ABOUT YOUR HEALTH.
