Dont get off at North Station and walk or take a cab.. .that's crazy. Instead just switch lines to the green line and take it to LONGWOOD station. It's a short walk from Longwood station.
See map in website:

To get to Dana Farber Cancer Institute from North Station:
Green Line Riverside ("D" train)
Get off at the Longwood stop, walk to the left up the hill on Chapel St. Turn left on Longwood Ave. At third light, turn right on Binney St. and walk to Dana-Farber, on your right.
OR
Heath Street ("E" train)
Get off at the Longwood Medical Area stop at the corner of Huntington and Longwood Avenues. Walk up Longwood Ave., passing Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital Boston. Turn left on Binney St. and walk to Dana-Farber, on your right.
Both D and E trains of The Green Line go through North Station. You want to take an "inbound" train.
The second choice: E Train will involve the shorter walk. It is the train that I recommend.
